Jayanth Katta
AWS Platform Engineer
Spring, Texas, United States

Platform engineer on the AWS team at ExxonMobil, working across observability, FinOps and fleet operations — CloudWatch and Datadog telemetry, cost dashboards and savings tracking, SSM patch compliance, tagging standards, and automated cleanup of unused storage. I build the systems that keep infrastructure observable, automated, and out of people's way.

Experience
ExxonMobil
Jan 2025 – Present · Spring, TX
AWS Platform Engineer
Since June 2026
  • Own monitoring and observability across the AWS estate — CloudWatch metrics, logs and alarms, with telemetry integrated into Datadog and Splunk so cloud signals sit alongside the rest of the enterprise's
  • Drive FinOps reporting: track realised savings and build the cost dashboards that show spend trends and the impact of optimisation work — in QuickSight, and as custom React front-ends where the view needs to go beyond what BI tooling offers
  • Automate cost hygiene across accounts — detection and removal of orphaned EBS volumes and stale snapshots, recurring spend that accumulates silently and is rarely reclaimed by hand
  • Manage patch compliance for the EC2 fleet with AWS Systems Manager — patch baselines, maintenance windows, and compliance reporting
  • Maintain the tagging standard that cost allocation and automation depend on; reliable chargeback and safe automated cleanup both rest on tags being right
  • Deploy infrastructure as code with Terraform and HCP Terraform, delivered through GitHub pull requests and pipelines so every change is reviewed and version-controlled
Data Engineer · Azure Infrastructure Engineer
Jan 2025 – May 2026
  • Led enterprise cost optimization across Azure and Oracle platforms, delivering $2.4M+ in savings through rightsizing, decommissioning, and licensing optimization
  • Designed and implemented scalable, cloud-ready solutions following Azure infrastructure best practices
  • Automated operational workflows using PowerShell, Azure CLI, and Ansible, significantly reducing manual effort and improving reliability
  • Established version-controlled automation frameworks using GitLab, improving team consistency and productivity
  • Proactively communicated risks, progress, and financial impact to stakeholders, enabling faster, informed decision-making

Pioneer Natural Resources
Feb 2017 – Dec 2024 · Irving, TX
Database Administrator · Azure Infrastructure Engineer
  • Administered 5+ enterprise database platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB, MongoDB) across 100+ production and non-production databases
  • Managed Azure infrastructure supporting critical workloads — provisioning, IAM, RBAC, networking, and monitoring across multiple environments
  • Built and deployed 50+ infrastructure components using Terraform pipelines in Azure DevOps, enabling repeatable, version-controlled IaC delivery across environments
  • Automated operational workflows using PowerShell, Azure CLI, and Ansible, reducing manual effort by 40–60%
  • Leveraged Ansible Tower to automate database refresh, patching cycles, and DB user termination workflows across 100+ databases, eliminating manual intervention
  • Implemented backup, recovery, patching, and disaster recovery strategies ensuring 99.9%+ availability for business-critical systems
  • Reduced incident resolution time by ~30% through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and capacity planning
  • Supported cloud migration and modernization initiatives, transitioning workloads from on-prem to Azure platforms

OSI Digital
Aug 2011 – Oct 2016 · Hyderabad, India
Oracle Application Database Administrator
  • Administered Oracle Applications, EBS ERP suite, and Oracle WebLogic Server across enterprise environments
  • Managed database installation, configuration, patching, performance optimization, backup, and recovery
  • Used STATSPACK, Enterprise Manager, and AWR to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks
  • Built Bash automation scripts to streamline repetitive operational tasks
Technical Writing
jayanthkatta.com/blog
2023 – Present
  • AWS Architecture Series — enterprise architecture patterns, one problem at a time: Transit Gateway topologies, IAM Identity Center, Control Tower with AFT, Aurora Global Database, Route 53 ARC, Graviton and Spot capacity strategy, and the SQS/SNS/EventBridge decision model. Each written against current AWS documentation.
  • AWS Platform Engineering Lab — a 52-week build series shipping one production-grade platform capability per week: account vending with Organizations and SCPs, IAM Identity Center, ECS Fargate self-service, centralised logging, Security Hub and GuardDuty, and Config compliance automation.
  • AWS Daily Intelligence — daily analysis of AWS service releases and what they change in practice.
  • GCP Architecture Series — the same treatment on Google Cloud, published daily and explained on its own terms rather than as an AWS comparison: the organisation, folder and project hierarchy, Cloud Identity as an externally drawn boundary, Resource Manager's asynchronous control plane, and service enablement as a project's real attack surface. Every technical figure is verified against Google's own documentation before publishing.
  • Weekly Intelligence, three clouds — a Saturday roundup of everything AWS, Azure and Google Cloud shipped that week, ranked. The inventory is built by script from the vendors' own release feeds, so the completeness the series promises is a property of the tooling rather than of attention.
  • Built and run the publishing platform: static site generation, a RAG-backed search over the archive — Bedrock Titan embeddings scored in Lambda against an index in S3, with answers generated by Bedrock — and GitHub Actions pipelines for publishing and reindexing.
